For nearly 6000 years Jaffa constituted the maritime gateway to the land of Israel and Jerusalem: the Egyptians role there, the Philistines, the tribe of Dan, Senacherib, Alexander the Great, the Maccabees, the Romans, Napoleon, the Muslims, the crusaders and the Ottoman Turks. The ancient Christians transformed it into a pilgrimage site thanks to the Home of Simon the Tanner where according to tradition St. Peter got the idea of spreading Christianity to all the world's inhabitants. Operating in the alleyways are over 50 galleries, studios and trendy design shops. Alongside renowned and established artistic centers such as the Ilana Goor Museum, Horace Richter, Frank Meisler, Varda Carmeli and Ben Zion David, we find new galleries such as the Gallery for Original Ethiopian Art, the Bauhaus Center and the Aharon Farkash Poster collection Gallery that constitute a draw for art lovers nationwide. Ancient Jaffa continues to be a unique artist colony where a group of young artists and creators such as Gil Shohat, Ayal Shifron and Hagar Rahavi live alongside established artists such as the sculptors Varda Ghivoly and Ilan Gelber the curators Etti and Freddie Fabian and the jewelry makers Rahel Gra and Gabi Marbach.
